Hiked it this weekend with my wife, son (5yrs old), and daughter (3 yrs old). Weather was perfect. Dogwoods in bloom and rhododendruns opening soon. The falls are definitely worth the short walk. The man-made overlooks are a little scary as the railings have openings large enough for a small child to fall through. We spent more than an hour alongside the stream having a picnic lunch and never saw another hiker.

Hiked April 10, 2004. Although in a great area that promised an excellent day hike, I was dismayed at the amount of trash and debris encountered along the path and in Carter's lake. There was even some refuse trapped on the cascades. Either the recent heavy rains have stirred a lot of this up, or those who frequent the park aren't picking up after themselves. Some recent campers had even left their trash near the sawmill area. We encountered these folks in the parking lot upon arriving, but had no idea of the mess they had left behind. It's a shame, because the diversity of plantlife and wildlife, along the the distant sounds of the falling water, would generally make this a favorite place to spend a warm, Spring day. The high bridge over the creek is certainly a dramatic and excellent addition to the park. The lake was up really high - maybe 10 feet or more - due to the recent heavy rains, and was quite murky (as are most bodies of water in the area right now). I still recommend the trail, but would like to see an effort on the part of ALL users of this area to keep it clean (the ATV tire and oil bottle left on a stump at the foot of the bridge were just too much!). Even if each hiker were to pick up one piece of refuse as they go, it would probably be much more pleasant. My wife and I picked up what we could, but would have had to spend an entire day just to clean up the trail section. The peninsula where the mill once stood (down near the water where it's obvious fishermen sit on the shore) was even worse. Good scenery, fairly easy hike, but just very messy right now.

Great trail scenic peaceful and nice. Still easy in easy out. Shaded.

We did this in a light rain on Sunday afternoon. There was only one other car in the parking lot. This is an easy, fun hike. The stream is noisy and will be even more beautiful when the Rhododendrons are blooming. If it had been warmer and drier, we would have spent some time resting on one of the large rocks by the stream, enjoying the surroundings. My odometer clocked the distance as 7.4 miles from Maddox St. in Elijay, then left on a paved road for 1.1 miles, 0.9 miles of dirt/gravel, then 1.75 miles of pavement to the boat ramp parking lot.

At the start its a little rough, narrow path, rocky, tree roots. Once across the bridge the trails are wide and very easy.

The falls are at a low flow this year because of the drought, but they still make a lot of noise.
