I hiked the trails one day last week. It was a hot day, but did not work up a hard sweat. It is up hill for a short way and then becomes fairly level. The next time that I go, I plan to have some reference material to explain more about my journy. There are markers, however, that helps a lot.

Hiked this trail with my dogs on Sunday (march 6,2005). This trail has alot of great information about the battle of allatoona pass. On weekends the parking lot seems to fill up fast, so it would be a good idea to get there early.

We hiked Allatoona Pass yesterday, 12/12/04. The history behind the area was most intriguing. I thought the state monuments were a nice touch. The trails were very easy to follow and the markers were easy to read. With this being a shorter hike, it was nice to have an interpretive trail to learn more about the area. This is a great day hike. We covered the majority of the trails (including both ridges on either side of the cut) with dogs in less than 2 hours. Excellent location. Definitely worth coming back to.

HIKED ALLATOONA PASS ON SAT 8-7-2004, NOON TO 135PM. CLEAR BEAUTIFUL DAY ABOUT 83 DEGREES. VERY PRETTY AREA, NICE WIDE IN PLACES BUT ALWAYS CLEAR. BE SURE TO TAKE AN OVERVIEW MAP, SIGNS ARE A LITTLE CONFUSING. IF YOU LIKE CIVIL WAR HISTORY THIS IS A MUST. MARKERS ALONG THE WAY. THERE ARE A FEW MODERATE INCLINES BUT OVERALL THE TRAIL IS LEVEL. ON A HOT SUMMER DAY TAKE A DIP IN LAKE ALLATOONA THERE ARE SEVERAL NICE PLACES THAT ARE SECLUDED AND HAVE SANDY BEACH ACCESS TO LAKE. WELL MAINTAINED, NOT BAD FOR A FOOTHILL HIKE CLOSE IN TO ATLANTA. WE SAW 5 OTHER HIKERS. GO ABOUT 1/4 MILE PAST RECOMENDED PARKING AREA AND YOU WILL FIND A NICE PAVED PARKING LOT WITH INFO ON THE TRAIL. HAPPY TRAILS BILL J WOODSTOCK, GA

Except for the climb to Star Fort it is easy

Does anyone know if you can bike and roller blade on a relatively paved road anywhere at Lake Alatoona?

Thursday, September 11, 2003

Is there a hiking group I could join that hikes around Cartersville & environs?

Tuesday, September 2, 2003

the directions are wrong. Take I-75 exit #283, go east on (Old) Allatoona Rd about 1/2 mile, cross RR tracks and go about 1/2 mile. Small parking lot on left. If you cross tracks twice, you've gone too far.

Has anyone hiked this trial? The exit number off the freeway (Exit 122) confused me. I hiked Red Top and the exit numbers in bartow County seem to be in the low 300's. Any experience or suggestions?

Very nice battlefield and fort, the earthworks are still in great shape....

I found the trails at Alatoona relatively easy, however I feel that the trails on the east side arn't marked as well as they should be, especially if hiking in the fall.

Let me start off by saying that I have never witnessed nor experienced any problems with the parking lot. Maybe some folks should reflect on their own ability to operate a motor vehicle safely and properly. Please put a large warning sign on your vehicle because I frequently visit the Pass. My dog Emma and I love to explore the area from the nice flat rail bed to the battle trenches on top of the Pass. In the summertime it is a little cooler especially in between the steep walls of the Pass itself. It is beautiful year round but the fall and winter are especially nice because you don't have all the boat noise. The lake is drawn down low after Labor Day but it is still nice. The rail bed and the levee by the parking lot make for a nice bike ride too if you are so inclined. The ground is hard as long as it is dry and gives you about three miles of good riding. But mostly I come to walk with Emma and imagine what this place was like 150 years ago.

I just want to thank you for this great site on Allatoona Pass. I wish you had more about the battle, but I understand its not a history site. I didn't find any historical inaccuracies in the piece.

I have many complants about the area, the parking lot had to be made by a 1st grader. There are not any trash cans. who ever wrote the report on the main page needs to learn his/her history before posting it on the web. Also, at the end of the pass, or cuts, is the original resting place of the unknown soilder, which was moved when CSX trasfered th tracks to where they now run. The church was originaly on top of the eastern hill.

Whoever put up the parking lot must be nuts! It's dangerous beyond words. A major accident waiting to happen. People just drive off the unmarked parts into an abyss never to be seen again! How is a vehicle supposed to navigate in a lot that is barely 20 or so feet from parking slot to border. God forbid the elderly and retired people don't lose their lives on this poorly designed and disfunctional lot. It's a fine idea but designed by some idiot.

why aren't there any trails for horses like they are in tennesses there nothing for the people who have horses to do around here,

Thursday, November 2, 2000

The trails are being maintianed and cleared by several Etowah Valley Historical Society volunteers, the Boy Scouts and the Corps of Engineers. They faithfully keep the area in great shape for hiking and maintian informative signs. They encourage responsible visitors.

The trail is easy, but steep and slippery in some approaches to the forts. Watch your footing! All in all, it provides a peaceful stroll in the woods. Along the way, there are several markers which describe the battle in great detail.

I spent many summers at the Altoona Marania and Campgroung located a stones throw from the entrance to the trail. An additional note...as you cross over the railroad tracks (heading north) you'll notice a road that tapers off to the left (just before the tracks.) I recommend heading down that road only about five yards and stopping. The site you have in front of you is the grave of an unknown soldier. The entire area is rich in history and I've heard reports that the old church next to the tracks is either built directly where another had been built or is in fact dated back to the Civil War era. I'd be interested in knowing...I've been in it several times.
If you know of more significant areas in and around Altoona please e-mail me at kvfalcon@hotmail.com Thank you and happy hiking!

Strenuous when traversed via the Vineland Mountain Eagle Scout Trail that begins near the base of the Allatoona Lake Damn. Very beautiful, not very well maintained, but reasonably well marked approach to Allatoona Pass. Very steep ascents in most of beginning of trail which climbs from the base of the lake dam to overlooking the dam and lake. Great forest, Etowah River, and Allatoona Lake views at a price! My Uncle has a heart condition and we were very concerned as we discovered the beauty of this trail. Tons of delicious hickory nuts this season, October 14, 1999.

Being a resident of Allatoona, I have walked the Trails many a time. In the summer of 1999 the Boy Scouts and the Corp. of Engineers placed many sighs telling about the history. Also, the BS made the trails easier to find by placeing timbers along the trail. At the southern end of the trail look to the left and you will see the old hospital used during the war. Now it is someones house so don't try walk around like you own the place. Not to show favoritism, but the trails are some of the best (non-paying) trails in Bartow.

I rate this "moderate" instead of easy because I'm including the paths to the two forts.

The Tennessee Road begins just to the right of the entrance gate from the parking lot. It is now partially blocked with downed trees and ends at the lake. Be very careful near the lake as the road becomes overgrown and almost impassable and dangerous during the spring and summer.
