Introduction

Nancy Creek Trail is a 5.4 mile out and back trail connecting Murphy Candler Park Murphy Candler Park Nature Trail to the Johnson Ferry Redevelopment Project. This trail crosses Nancy Creek once, on a bridge between Murphy Candler Park and Blackburn Park, and runs near an unnamed creek on one section in Blackburn Park. Almost the entire trail is in full sunlight and there is little elevation change.

Nancy Creek Trail

The hike begins opposite Murphy Candler Park as a wide roadside sidewalk maintained by Atlanta's PATH along Nancy Creek Drive. The trail turns left at Ashford-Dunwoody Road, almost immediately crossing Nancy Creek on a bridge before crossing Hart's Mill Road. At .8 miles the Nancy Creek Trail turns left into Blackburn Park. As the trail climbs an easy hill a massive oak to the left beckons with shade.

From here the trail curves slowly right until it makes a hard left at 1.2 miles where it enters the only extended area of partial shade on the trail. On the left, but not visible from the trail, is a small unnamed creek. This tributary joins the much larger Nancy Creek just before the bridge earlier in this trail description. On the right, and only occasionally visible from the trail are Blackburn Park's tennis courts.

After leaving the forested portion of Nancy Creek Trail, ballfields on the right replace the tennis courts but forest continues on the left. Sunlight on this section varies depending on the time of day and time of year, but it is normally shaded in the morning. From the ballfields the trail drops slightly to Donaldson Drive, where a small plaque to the right of the trail dedicates the park to "Father Blackburn," an early leader in girls soccer.

Crossing Donaldson Place at 1.7 miles, the trail enters the only partially completed Johnson Ferry Redevelopment Project. It is completed to Durden Drive, an estimated distance of 2.7 miles. At this point, retrace your steps to your car.
