Trail to the Marble Mine in Sloppy Floyd State Park

The 1.6 mile out and back Marble Mine Trail can be accessed from the Pinhoti Trail parking area in James H. 'Sloppy' Floyd State Park just south of Summerville, Georgia. There are two other configurations to this hiking trail that make the trail 1.8 or 2.2 miles long.

Parking at the Pinhoti Trail parking area the marked trail entrance is on the right as you enter. This climbs through a secondary growth forest to a road at 0.1 mile. From this point on the hike to the marble mine is on a wide road, making this an excellent family hike. The road continues until 0.4 miles, where it intersects with the road from Sloppy Floyd Lake. Turn left and what begins as an easy to moderate climb on a somewhat rocky road steepens to a difficult climb for less than 0.1 miles. Just as the mine entrance becomes visible the trail quickly eases, turning almost level at the end.

Marble Mine entrance

The mine entrance is huge, and has been developed with a boardwalk into the entrance and around a small lake. From the boardwalk you can peer into the mine, which is undeveloped. Make a note of how cool it is near the mine, especially on hot summer days. At this point, you can return to the parking area or extend the hike.

To the right of the mine is the Pinhoti Access Trail/Marble Mine Loop. Follow this around the mine entrance to the Pinhoti Trail. At the top of this trail turn right and continue for 0.2 miles to a second sign indicating the Marble Mine Loop. This follows an old roadbed back to the trail from the parking lot.

For a 2.2 mile loop trail return down the Marble Mine Trail but continue straight. In 0.5 miles the trail 'T's at Sloppy Floyd Lake (sometimes called the Upper Lake). Turn left and follow this to the paved Sloppy Floyd Road. Turn left and continue on the road to the entrance to the parking lot. Turn left and return to your vehicle.
