Initially, The Jarrard Gap Trail shares the path with the Slaughter Creek Trail. After a short walk down a wide road the trail turn left before a wooden bridge. An old sign also marks the path. It winds down to Slaughter Creek where a single rail bridge crosses the stream, replacing a single split log that use to do this job. Hikers frequently left poles on either side to help cross the stream. The trail then rises to a Forest Service road, where the Slaughter Gap Trail continues straight ahead. Turn right on the road, which continues to curve to the right. Directly in front a the start of the curve is a blazed rock that marks the entrance to the Jarrard Gap Trail. The blaze is somewhat faded with age and may be difficult to spot.
The trail now follows an old logging road along Lance Branch a spring-fed stream. Then it rises moderately, leaving the logging road, climbing steadily from this point to Jarrard Gap. Off and on it uses old roadbed and new path to the gap. Just prior to reaching the Appalachian Trail it joins a Forest Service road to the top of Jarrard Gap (3250 ft.).
Lake Winfield Scott is a fee area and the footpath is maintained. This is one of the shortest approach paths to the AT.
