On the western border of Georgia, near Alabama, Chattooga County includes portions of Johns Mountain and Taylor Ridge, part of the Armuchee District of the Chattahoochee National Forest. The county was one the second tier of counties created from the original Cherokee Nation on December 28, 1838. During The Civil War southern elements of the Army of the Cumberland marched through the county on their way to the Battle of Chickamauga.
