Located on the Chattahoochee River about half-way between Carrollton and Newnan, Chattahoochee Bend State Park opened in 2011. When it opened it had 2910 acres of land under management, although this is expected to increase in the future. The entrance to the trail is at the end of the main road past the visitors center (Flatrock Road) near the boat ramp, a pavilion and a playground for the kids. Other trails in the park are slated for future development.

Notice the healthy, natural riparian (riverine) zones on both sides of the river. About 60% of the food consumed by the fish come from these riparian zones, so the abundant growth signals a healthy river. They also supply shelter for amphibians (watch for frogs), reduce the sediment in the river, and partially filter local run-off.
As the trail winds through the forest it passes a two-story observation tower at 0.8 miles. On quiet days its not unusual to see deer pass nearby. The level trail continues past the tower, but is somewhat overgrown. We managed to hike to the Bend of the River at 3.0 miles and return for a total of 6.0 miles. If you continue on, the trail turns right, leaving the river and climbs back to the entrance road for a total out distance of 6.0 miles. At this point you can return on the trail for a total of 12.0 miles, or follow the entrance road to the end for a total of 10.0 miles.
