Big Creek Greenway, Section 4

Section 4 of the Alpharetta portion of the Big Creek Greenway begins east of the original entrance to the Greenway in Northpoint Mall, just past Ethan Allen Furniture. Of the four sections, this is the shortest. If you hike it point-to-point it is only 1.2 miles in length. From this loop parking area, follow the paved trail for 0.3 miles to a 4-way intersection. To the left, Big Creek Greenway Alpharetta Section 3 ends after crossing a bridge over a tributary, to the right is a pedestrian only section of boardwalk that serves as the end of the Big Creek Greenway Hiking Trail and straight ahead is bridge over Big Creek that marks the start of Section 4.

The bridge is a great place to study the natural setting of Big Creek and the wide variety of birds that call this body of water home including wrens, titmice, even the brown thrasher, the state bird of Georgia. Of course larger birds like hawks and owls are also common. Insects thrive in the healthy riparian zone of Big Creek that serves to attract birds and provide a substantial food source for fish in the river.

After the bridge the trail bears right and begins to parallel the creek. At 0.4 miles the trail crosses a bridge at the original end, about 800 feet from Mansell Road. To continue on the Alpharetta portion, turn left after crossing the bridge. Less than 0.1 mile later the trail splits. The path to the right goes to the Mansell Road access while the trail to the left rises over a sensitive wetlands area as it crosses under Mansell Road. At 0.5 miles the return trail from Mansell Road rejoins Big Creek Greenway.

The trail continues with almost no elevation change until 0.9 miles, when it bears left and then right after a few steps to miss an unnamed lake. At 1.1 miles the trail enters full sun and climbs an easy hill to on-the-street parking.
