Directions

Section 3 of the Big Creek Greenway in Alpharetta starts at Rock Mill Park on Kimball Bridge Road. As you approach the underpass, notice the old underpass on the right. When the Kimball Bridge Road bridge replacement project was completed this was left as an overflow in case Big Creek flooded in this area. The project rerouted Big Creek in this area and completed the Kimball Bridge underpass including the portion of the Big Creek Trail that ran through the underpass.

Originally the trail left Big Creek, rose to Kimball Bridge Rd, and crossed the road at the light at Rock Mill intersection, then returned to the Greenway. The old trail still connects to the Greenway Trail, coming in from the right just before the first crossing of Big Creek in this section at 0.2 miles. Shortly after this bridge a trail joins on the left, allowing access for some of the developments east of the greenway on Kimball Bridge Road. At 0.4 miles a second bridge returns the greenway trail to the right side of Big Creek.

Another pathway joins the Big Creek Greenway at 0.9 miles, coming in from Kimball Farms and less than 0.2 miles later a bridge carries the trail over an unnamed tributary. Shortly after the bridge a second subdivision trail come in, also from the right. As the land to the right drops back to trail level at 1.4 miles a large, swampy area forms. This is but a portion of the creek's original flood plain, but it is essential in giving the river an area for overflow during heavy rain. At 1.8 miles the path from the Haines Bridge parking area joins the Big Creek Greenway.

0.2 miles later the trail splits and you are on the original portion of the Big Creek Greenway. Whether you chose the right or left trail is does not add mileage to this portion of trail. 0.1 mile later the paths rejoin and another path, from a nearby business development, joins from the left. At 2.6 miles there is a four-way intersection that marks the return point for this hike. If you need facilities, there is a bathroom to the right, a short walk from the trail.
